In law, jurisdiction is the practical authority granted to a formally constituted legal body to deal with and make pronouncements on legal matters and,by implication,to administer justice within a defined area of responsibility. In practice, jurisdiction is the first issue that a court has to deal with when a dispute is submitted before it.Therefore, this part examines the jurisdiction of courts in international civil litigation prior to the discussion of choice of law issues.

Chapter one of this part provides an introduction to international civil jurisdiction which discusses the definition and categories of the international civil jurisdiction. The conflict of jurisdictions and the possible solutions are also dealt with in this chapter.Chapter two summarizes and analyzes current Chinese legislation on international civil jurisdiction which also provides comments on Chinese legislation and judicial practice in this respect.
