A,Chinese national who habitually resides in Shanghai,enters into a contract in London with B,an English company the purpose of which is to smuggle an ancient Chinese painting out of China.Under Chinese law,this painting is a national cultural treasure which is prohibited from export,whereas such a contract is not illegal under English law.Disputes are submitted to a People’s Court in Shanghai.The court hold that the contract is void,as the Chinese rules banning the export of national cultural treasures are mandatory rules that should govern it irrespective of its applicable law designated by choice-of-law rules.(https://www.daowen.com)
