This year，Shanghai Century Publishing Group plans to hold a special exhibition of Zhang's comic works at the Frankfurt Book Fair in Germany，the largesteventof its kind in the world，Wang says.
“Excellent Chinese comic works such as Sanmao need to be shared with more readers outside China.There's no reason why Sanmao cannot be the next Tintin.”
In 2015，the French version of the book，San Mao:Le Petit Vagabond，beat 10 other contenders to win the Heritage Award at the 42nd Angouleme International Comics Festival in France.The event organizer said it had awarded the accolade to the comic because of its portrayal of optimism and kindness.
Seeing how the comic has touched the lives of so many people，Zhang Weijun now plans to turn Sanmao into an ambassador for charity.“Ihope that Sanmao will soon be able to step out of the comic books to attend more charity events.”

Peking University associate professor Shao Yanjun，50，is not the firstone to discover that the younger generation，growing up with smart devices and the internet，actually use a different language when they are online，and sometimes，offline too，which is noteasy to understand for her and her peers.
She has become the first to direct and guide her doctoral andmaster's students towrite a book The Book ofWallbreaking:Keywords in Chinese Internet Subcultures focusing on the new language.
Wang Yusu，a doctoral candidate and deputy compiler-in-chief of the book，says:“These terms are seen and heard widely，but it's hard to explain theirmeanings and usage even if you search on baidu.com.Among the new words，those we chose are the ones that will stand the test of time，and are representative of the internet subcultures.”

A new translation of the celebrated historical epic，The Romance of the Three Kingdoms，has been completed.
The novel，written by Luo Guanzhong in the 14th century，is based on real-life historical figures and events.The story dramatizes the lives of feudal lords and their retainers toward the end of the Eastern Han Dynasty.
Martin Palmer，whose work includes the English adaptations of The Book of Chuang Tzu and The Most Venerable Book，was tasked with translating the Chinese classic.
“The reason why it's such an amazing novel is not somuch the descriptions of the battles，but it is the personalities and the way Luo makes these figures come alive，”Palmer says.“What Iwanted to do was capture the intrigue，the plots and the narrative.”
Part historical，part legend and partmythical，the novel comprises more than 800，000 words，more than 1，100 characters and 120 chapters.
For Palmer to translate and abridge one of the greatest classic Chinese novels，filled with complex stories and characters，was an ambitious project.
He had to cut down the hundreds ofminor characters aswell as sub-plots，repetitions and minor incidents from the original and transform it into one seamless narrative.“Ihad to decide what the absolutely centralmoments in the novel are，as they needed to be translated in full，”Palmer says.He says translating the poetry was also a challenge.“Almost every chapter has poetry and every so often you come across these amazing poems by great poets，”Palmer says.“I relied upon a poet friend ofmine，Jay Ramsay，who worked with me to translate them.”Luo's epic novel has also been compared to theworks ofWilliam Shakespeare，such as RichardⅢand Henry IV.
Palmer is director of the International Consultancy on Religion，Education and Culture and secretary-general of the Alliance of Regions and Conservation.It took him three years to complete the translation of the book，which he did in his spare time.
Palmer says that，as more people are taking an interest in China，Chinese culture is becomingmore popular.

Despite their popularity，only three of Jin Yong'smartial arts novels have been translated into English.But fans will soon getmore from the writer as hismost popular trilogy，named after the first of the three books，Legends of the Condor Heroes，is scheduled to hit bookstores in February.
Jin Yong is the pen name of Louis Cha.And the author，who lives in Hong Kong of China，is one of the best-selling Chinese authors.With regard to Jin Yong's works this latest translation project is the most ambitious.The trilogy，written by Jin Yong in the 1950s and 60s，covers the Song Dynasty and the early Ming Dynasty，and features hundreds of characters.
According to the publishing house，Maclehose Press，the translated work will come in 12 volumes，including Legends of the Condor Heroes；Divine Condor，Errant Knight；and Heaven Sword and Dragon Sabre.
Speaking of the projectwhich she took up in 2012，Holmwood，a self-employed translator focusing on Chinese-English literary translations，says in an email interview:“It had to be Jin Yong then.Itwas the obvious place to start，not only because of the quality of hiswriting，but also because of his standing and reputation in Asia.”
Having studied history at the University of Oxford，Holmwood was determined to learn Chinese due to her previous trip to China.In a bookshop there，she saw a whole shelf dedicated to Jin Yong.She bought a copy of Jin Yong'swork—Lu Ding Ji(The Deer and the Cauldron)，the longest of his novels.“What is a bigger challenge for the translator ismaking the original pace and excitement into English.It's all aboutwhether the English reader will be lured by the emotions and characters.”
