2.0 Introduction

After examining the definition of domestic violence, the second step is to look at the previous studies in the UK and China.Through critiquing them,I will develop an analysis of how in the past academics have researched domestic violence, what they found and why they did so,in such a way as to benefit and inform my own research. Therefore, this chapter will focus on some of the previous studies in the UK and China.Specifically, the chapter will look mainly at studies dealing with how widespread domestic violence is thought to be within the UK and China;what forms of this violence perpetrators used in both countries;and what experiences and attitudes the general publics have regarding it.From these studies, the similarities and differences between the UK and China will be drawn out, from which we may see how the phenomenon of domestic violence occurs in both countries and how these British and Chinese academics and practitioners explore domestic violence.

The two main questions to be addressed here are:

 • What these studies reveal,and

 • How was the research conducted in the UK and China?
