9.3 Summary

9.3 Summary

This chapter presented both the interview and questionnaire data in relation to verbal and non-verbal behaviour as forms of psychological violence.Firstly, from the interview data,we can see how the respondents conceptualised communication in marital life,in a similar way to academics. This is because the interviewees also suggested that communication is essential and very important for couples, and directly impacts on marital life. From their own experiences, they noted that healthy communication between couples could prevent domestic violence.Secondly, the classification of communication as verbal and non-verbal appears prominently in the conceptualisation of communication by the interviewees. This part focuses mainly on discussing non-communication and dirty language because the interviewees mainly talked about these. Finally, through the analysis of both qualitative and quantitative data,we can see that there is a gender difference in these two verbal and non-verbal behaviours between wives and husbands. This difference may be linked to the division of labour, power, and position in family,as well as to the traditional culture. For these reasons, women may be the main victims in non-communication and dirty language. The next chapter will move on to discussing how the wives and husbands behave when there is a conflict between them.
