The Genealogy of the Dragon King in the River Head
There was a Baitou Mountain near Niujie of Eryuan County and there was a big cave near the mountain，in which a python lived.The cave was close to the main road，and when people went to the fair by passing the cave，they got sucked into the cave and eaten by the python.So，the government issued a notice：“Anyone who can catch the python will be rewarded 1,000 tael.”
On the west side of Niujie was a place called San'guoshi.There lived a man who had nine sons and nine girls.The family was too poor to support so many children.People persuaded him to kill the python to get the reward.The man also wanted to kill the python for people，so he readily agreed.
One day，the man began to take action.He carried many sharp knives and covered his face with a handkerchief.Only his eyes were exposed.Then，he squatted beside the cliff cave and waited.The python smelled the stranger and sucked the man into his stomach.The man wallowed in the python's stomach，and soon the python was stabbed to death.Several local farmers immediately cut open the belly of the python，and the man jumped from the belly safe and sound.
The local people thought that the man had done a good job and wanted to build a house for him.The house was very beautiful with carved beams and painted buildings.When it was about to be completed，the man said that he did not like the pear orchard but the place of the river head.A little later，a gust of wind suddenly blew the newly-built house in the pear orchard to the river head.The carpenter was blown to the river head and continued to build the house there.Since then，the man had settled down there.
Later，the man and his children all died.People regarded him as the dragon king of the river head.They turned his house into the temple of the dragon king and made many statues of gods.The statue of the old dragon king（the man）was in the middle，and the statues of their children were on both sides.His eldest son was appointed as the dragon king in Guanying，his second son as the dragon king in Dazhuang，and his third son as the dragon king near the river head.
The fourth son was the village god of Daguo Village，who was a vicious guy.On the day when he was offered sacrifices by the local people，only after they sacrificed him the cow，the sheep and the pig with sincerity did the sky clear up.Otherwise，there definitely came a strong storm and a heavy rain on that day.If anyone offended him，he made his/her family uneasy.
The fifth son was regarded as the dragon king in Guanshang near Shaoping.He was also the village god there.But he was even more diabolical.He often brought many disasters to people and spread pestilence and made people sick.The local people had to kowtow to him with presenting a pig's head and a cock.
The sixth son was regarded as the dragon king on a mountain in the area of the river head.It was not clear where the seventh son was appointed.The eighth son was appointed in two places，one in Wuchong（near the land controlled by the dragon king of Hequ）and was the village god of Xiaodian.Another place was in Jideng，where he had a flock of sheep and found a sheep herder to help him.The ninth son was the village god of Handeng.He was good-tempered and did not make trouble for the local people.
The eldest daughter of the dragon king of the river head was named a dragon daughter near the eighth son.The local people called her“Old Lady Huang Gu”.She was kind-hearted and was willing to help others.If people were going to hold a wedding ceremony，and if they would need bowls，chopsticks，cups，plates，etc.，they just needed to write a note and stuck it on a big tree in front of the temple.The following day，these items would appear in front of the temple.But after being used，these items must be returned in full.However，some people were greedy for small gains and refused to repay them.Old Lady Huang Gu was very angry and stopped lending villagers the items.It was said that she once lent out a big porcelain dish with a big goldfish carved in the middle，which is very beautiful and is still kept by some people secretly until now.
The dragon king had another daughter.The black dragon king of Xiashankou once proposed to her.But she didn't like him and married the dragon king of Yunnanyi instead.Yunnanyi was very poor and the farms there were not good.So，being the dragon king of this place was also very poor.Every year，on the 23rd of the first month and the 23rd of the seventh month，when people offered sacrifices to the old dragon king of the river head，the daughter would go home and cry out to the old dragon king about her poverty.For this reason，there were always strong storms and heavy rains on that day.Later，the old dragon king pitied his daughter and gave her an extra share of water，which could irrigate all the lands under her jurisdiction.Since then，Yunnanyi had seen a bumper harvest of grain.People have been grateful to her，so her temple had many worshippers.Every time when people from Eryuan pass Yunnanyi，they kowtow to her.If their clothes are tattered，they could just put them in the temple and fetch them the following day，and then the clothes will be mended well.If they are short of travel expenses，as long as they faithfully write a note and burn it in the censer，they can pick up some money in the censer the following day.
The dragon king had another daughter who married to the dragon king of Louyi Village in Dengchuan.In the past，If people from Eryuan passed by Louyi Village on the day when the dragon king was offered sacrifices，the locals in Louyi Village must treat them with dinners and were particularly polite to them.The reason was that the dragon king's wife was from Eryuan.
