Popular Face-Swapping App Raises Concerns

A NEW CHINESE APP—ZAO—has rapidly become one of the country's most downloaded apps，while also triggering（引起）safety and privacy concerns.

The ZAO app was introduced by MoMo，a social app developer.Released on August 30，the app allows users to swap their faces with anyone else's in a video clip（片段）.Chinese users can use the app to i__1__themselves into scenes from well-known movies or TV series.By simply uploading to the app a series of selfies in which they blink，move their mouths and make facial expressions，users are able to realistically r__2__their animated likeness with the actors on screen in movies，TV series，or other content.

However，the function has caused concern over its potential for abuse.Industry experts warned that the authorization（授权）of photos to commercial companies may pose dangers in functions like payment through facial r__3__.

Meanwhile，the app also raises problems about users'privacy.An early version of the face-swap app's user agreement gave Changsha Shenduronghe Network Technology，a subsidiary（子公司）of MoMo，“free，irrevocable（不可撤销的），permanent，transferable（可转让的）and relicense-able（可再次授权的）”rights to all user-created content.In other words，photos and videos i__4__your face become the app creator's property once submitted（提交）.

The company was forced to issue a statement after critics attacked the app's privacy policy.“We understand the concerns about privacy.We've received the feedback,and will fix the i__5__that we didn't take into consideration,which will take some time,”the statement said.

The company has since changed its terms to say it will not use selfies or videos uploaded by users other than to improve the app.It also promised to remove from its servers any content that was uploaded but later d__6__by users.

In the United States，AI-powered face-swapping technology has been named deepfake.Critics say the technology can be used to create fake videos to manipulate（操纵）elections，defame（诽谤）someone，or potentially cause unrest by spreading misinformation（错误信息）on a massive scale.Concerns over deepfake technology have g__7__since the 2016 U.S.election campaign（选举活动）.That year saw wide use of online misinformation.Therefore，the technology is now being boycotted（联合抵制）in the U.S.
