The Warships That Ruled the Ancient Seas

For the ancient Greeks,a triple-decker(三层的)warship called the trireme was the key to sea power.These ships were built for speed.They could carry 170 men.Each man was r__1__for one oar(船桨).There were 85 oars on each side.

With all that manpower,triremes were faster than ships that ran only under sail(船帆).Before a battle,the men would leave unnecessary items on the bank.The ship became lighter.It could then run even f__2__!

Many people have been i__3__in the trireme.In 1982,architect John Coates and writer Frank Welsh set up an organization called The Trireme Trust.They wanted to find out just how well a trireme would p__4__in the sea.Their work inspired Greece's navy(海军)to build a real trireme.The modern trireme was finished in 1987.It is called the Olympias.

The Olympias was built a__5__to an ancient trireme used in the fifth century B.C.But different from ancient times,the 170 oars are handled by both men and women.The ship has been tested at sea.To people's a__6__,it runs very fast(about 16.5 km/h)!In 2004,the Olympias carried the Olympic torch(奥运火炬)across Greece's Piraeus Harbor.It was a great way to c__7__the opening of the Summer Olympics.
