Indonesia to Move Capital City

What can a government do if its capital city is rapidly sinking?Indonesia's answer is:to get a new one.

The country's president，Joko Widodo，made the a__1__in a speech to Parliament（议会）last month.The country has decided to move its seat of government out of Jakarta（雅加达）.He said，“A capital city is not just a s__2__of national identity，but also a representation（代表）of the progress of the nation.”

The new capital will be r__3__to Kalimantan（加里曼丹）.It is known for rainforests and coal mines（煤矿）.President Widodo toured the region in May to visit potential sites.The exact location is still unknown，f__4__the news would push up land prices.

Indonesia has the fourth largest p__5__in the world.Jakarta is home to more than ten million people.To make matters worse,around three times as many people live in surrounding towns.The large population has used so much groundwater that it has affected the ground levels.That makes Jakarta the fastest-sinking city in the world.Almost half of its area is already below sea level.At the current rate,about 95 percent of north Jakarta will be u__6__by 2050.

The announcement was met with doubt,however.People questioned whether such a move should be a matter of great urgency for Indonesia.There was also the question of cost.Moving the capital would c__7__as much as＄33 billion,according to a government official.“This is a big job,and it could take up to ten years,”he added.
