Archimedes'“War Machines”

We all know Archimedes was a clever scientist.Using a good method，he showed King Hiero that his crown was not made entirely of gold.However，did you know Archimedes was also an i__1__？In 215 B.C.，the Roman army invaded（入侵）Archimedes'home city of Syracuse.The scientist turned his attention away from calculations and i__2__“fought against”the enemy by inventing a number of“war machines”.

One of the machines was the Archimedes Claw（机械爪）.It was a big iron claw.The Roman army called it the“ship beaters”.The claw was so big that it must be c__3__by almost the entire population of Syracuse.It could pick up enemy ships and throw them far into the sea！
