When you are old and gray and full of sleep，
And nodding by the fire，take down this book，

And slowly read，and dream of the soft look
Your eyes had once，and of their shadows deep；

How many loved your moments of glad grace，
And loved your beauty with love false or true，
But one man loved the pilgrim^①soul in you，
And loved the sorrows of your changing face；

And bending down beside the glowing bars，
Murmur^②，a little sadly，how Love fled
And paced upon the mountains overhead

威廉·巴特勒·叶芝（William Butler Yeats，1865—1939），爱尔兰诗人和剧作家。1923年度的诺贝尔文学奖获得者。早期作品带有唯美主义倾向和浪漫主义色彩。19世纪90年代后，诗风逐渐走向坚实明朗和接近现实。20世纪20年代中期后，因接近人民生活和热心玄学派诗歌研究，作品融现实主义、象征主义和哲理思考为一体，以洗练的口语和含义丰富的象征手法，表现善恶、生死、美丑、灵肉的矛盾统一。

《当你老了》是叶芝为女演员茅德·冈所写，字字句句都是诗人爱的表白。“当你老了”是一种对时间的假设，但这种假设却因“头白了”，“睡意昏沉”和“炉火旁打盹”这些意象而具体起来。年轻时的恋人是漂亮的，有过许多追求者，但这并不代表真正的爱情，真正的爱情应该是：爱她“朝圣者的灵魂”，爱她“衰老了的脸上痛苦的皱纹”。整篇诗都是用第二人称，然而我们依然可以感觉到诗人的在场。时光摧毁了容颜，带走了青春，然而，时光也验证、创造了爱情。只有“当你老了”，经过漫长的时间考验，爱情才能坚如磐石。诗的语言朴素而含蓄，调子优雅而舒缓，透出一抹淡淡的哀伤。
