威廉·布莱克（William Blake，1757—1827），英国第一位重要的浪漫主义诗人。他浓厚的宗教意识、艺术家的天分和丰富的人生阅历，给他的诗歌提供了取之不尽的创作源泉，并使它的诗歌具有明显的宗教性、预言性、哲理性和艺术性等特点。其前期诗作主要包括《天真之歌》（Songs of Innocence，1789）及《经验之歌》（Songs of Experience，1794）等，语言简单易懂，且以短诗为主，音节也能短则短，题材内容则以生活中的所见所闻为主，诗集创作之时，工业革命刚刚开始，欧美政治革命高涨，诗人因此利用诗歌表达了对传统价值观念的怀疑；中后期作品趋向玄妙晦涩，充满神秘色彩，篇幅明显增长，有时长达数百乃至上千行，内容也明显地晦涩起来，以神秘、宗教，以及象征为主要特征。
《老虎》一诗出自其诗歌集《天真之歌》，通过简洁的语言和完美的韵律，诗人向读者传达了诸如邪恶、善良以及上帝等话题。诗人从夜晚见到的一只凶狠的老虎，联想到造物者上帝在创造了这只凶狠的老虎同时又创造了温顺的羔羊，通过对比，诗人表达了对世间万象的困惑。
本诗整体上采用了扬抑格的四音步诗行，尾韵为aabb。
