亨利·沃兹沃思·朗费罗（Henry Wadsworth Longfellow，1807—1882），美国浪漫主义诗人。少立志从文，后游历欧陆，精通多国语言。诗风质朴，情趣高洁，诗作多富于音乐感。诗集《夜吟》（Voices of the Night，1839）与《歌谣及其他》（Ballads and Other Poems，1841）风靡欧美，诗人初露锋芒。后潜心创作，诗名渐高，伦敦“诗人之角”立其胸像，为美国第一人。其他主要诗集有《奴隶之歌》（Poems on Slavery，1842），《伊凡吉林》（Evangeline，1847），《海华沙之歌》（Hiawatha，1855）等。
《潮涨兮，潮落兮》（1880）写于诗人暮年。第一行定下全诗基调，潮起潮落、云卷云舒，每节再以此行重复收之，首尾相连，令人回味无穷。第一节写黄昏，“天黄昏，暮鸦啼”，“褐色沙滩”，路上“行人”，寥寥数笔，即是一幅“黄昏独行图”，直似马东篱之《秋思》。第二节写夜景，细写自然之力，夜幕一落，天地昏暗，海波过处，足迹全无。第三节写黎明，“天破晓”、马嘶鸣，行人重上人生路，不归程。全诗色调灰暗，景致辽远，情致孤寂，情、理、景交融，让人感而发，发而思，思而悲——“人生天地间，忽如远行客”（《古诗十九首》）。人之生命短暂，而自然永恒。
本诗节奏和缓，重音后及韵脚处多用清辅音/s/，每节押韵格式为完整双行诗节（closed couplet），最后一行重复，故全部韵脚为aabba，首尾粘连，与其主旨浑然一体。
