Passage 57

学霸导读 锂电池给人们的生活带来了巨大的改变,其背后有三位科学家功不可没。

The 2019 Nobel Prize in Chemistry has been awarded to John B. Goodenough, M. Stanley Whittingham and Akira Yoshino. The three scientists share the prize for their work on the development of lithium-ion batteries ( 锂离子电池 ).

“Lithium-ion batteries have revolutionized ( 变革 ) our lives and are used in e 1 from mobile phones to laptops and electric vehicles,” according to the Nobel committee. “T 2 their work, this year’s Chemistry Laureates ( 获奖者 ) have laid the foundation of a wireless, fossil-fuel-free society.”

The lithium-ion battery is lightweight, rechargeable ( 可充电的 ) and powerful. It is used globally to power the portable ( 便携式的 ) electronics that we use to communicate, work, study, listen to music, and s 3 for knowledge. Electric vehicles were made possible because of the development of these batteries. Wireless communication has f lourished because of the technology. The rechargeable devices could also store signif icant a 4 of energy from renewable ( 可再生的 ) sources, such as solar and wind power.

Whittingham developed the f irst functional lithium battery in the early 1970s, but it was too explosive. Goodenough was r 5 for doubling the battery’s potential in 1980. Five years later, on the b 6 of Goodenough’s research, Yoshino eliminated pure lithium from the battery and produced the f irst commercially viable ( 切实可行的 ) lithium-ion battery. This is safer than pure lithium and made the battery workable for real-world applications.

At the age of 97, Goodenough is the oldest person to win a Nobel Prize. Speaking in an i 7 with The Times earlier this year, Goodenough said he had not appreciated the impact his work would have. The scientist, who s 8 works in the lab every day, said that he hoped the technology would continue to evolve to make electric cars more f inancially feasible. “We need to f ind a way to free ourselves from d 9 on burning fossil fuels.”

Professor Dame Carol Robinson, president of the Royal Society of Chemistry, said that battery technology r 10 an exciting f ield. “It’s not the end of the journey, as lithium is a f inite ( 有限的 ) resource, and many scientists around the world are building on the foundations laid by these three brilliant chemists,” she said.
