Passage 48
学霸导读 针对很多大学毕业生无法适应雇主要求,英国的一所大学开始了教学改革,让我们来一探究竟吧!
Getting a university degree has never s 1 more important: college graduates tend to earn more money, live longer, and be happier, according to studies. But college degrees are expensive ( especially in the U.S. ), narrowly focused ( especially in the U.K. ), and often fail to b 2 the skills employers want ( true in most countries ). Now, a new university in the U.K. wants to change that.
The London Interdisciplinary School ( LIS ), scheduled to open in 2021 with a t 3 of recruiting 100 students, will offer a three-year bachelor of arts and sciences degree designed to deal with real-world issues. The curriculum ( 全部课程 ) is built a 4 interdisciplinary ( 跨学科的 ) problems—knife crime, childhood obesity, plastic pollution, among others—as well as quantitative and qualitative research skills. Employers like the Met Police and Virgin will provide project ideas and o 5 f ive-week work experience for students.
The idea is s 6 to a U.S. liberal arts degree but also more specif ically focuses on main subjects—economics, psychology, sociology, statistics, etc.—to solve complex problems like childhood obesity. In other words, the p 7 , not the subject, sits at the center of the curriculum. The skills students develop, the founders hope, will more closely align with ( 与……匹配 ) what an AI-infused, automated world demands: collaboration ( 合作 ) between people and machines, critical thinking, speaking and writing skills, and data management, to name just a few things.
The challenges of building a new university from scratch ( 从零开始 ) are daunting: students have to sign up for, and pay for, something untested; faculty members will have to teach in a t 8 new and different way; and there’s a risk that an interdisciplinary curriculum will be interesting but thin.
At the LIS, students will instead apply directly during a predetermined “selection day” where everyone is invited to p 9 . This day will include a face-to-face so that the college can better understand a student’s background, motivations, interest and passions. Interviews will be conducted by a panel ( 讨 论 小 组 ) to minimize bias. Conditional offers will be granted based on personal background, circumstances and, also, g 10 .
