Camouf lage ( 保护色,拟态 ) is a tactic naturally used by animals to blend in with the surrounding environment and reduce their visibility ( 可视度 ). But while animals use their camouf lage to become undetectable ( 探测不到的 ) to predators, humans have taken inspiration for both recreational ( 娱乐的 ) and military p 1 .

Adapting to the color, temperature and terrain of the world’s landscapes, new camouf lage technology is being installed in military vehicles. The purpose, not dissimilar to that of animals, is to conceal their presence from the enemy.

Battlef ield conditions have no limitations, with military operations taking place in areas as diverse as deserts, forests and populated ( 人口稠密的 ) towns. Acknowledging this variety, BAE Systems has d 2 a f lexible camouf lage system to work in a range of environments.

The system, called ADAPTIV, enables vehicles to mimic surrounding temperatures, bypass thermal detectors, and transform properties to s 3 the changing terrain. They can even imitate objects such as bushes, rocks and animals. And just as chameleons ( 变色龙 ) send visual w 4 signs to predators, these vehicles can display text to signal peaceful intent to civilians ( 平民 ) and allies ( 盟友 ).

To a 5 these effects, the vehicles’ surfaces are covered in hexagonal ( 六边形 ) cells ( 单元格 ), called modules.

The modules can change temperature and display a range of patterns. The mechanism can also be used to control cells individually.

Tricking the enemy in war is not a new concept. Some soldiers started wearing khaki uniforms in the l8th century, while in World War I vehicles and buildings were painted with stripes and shapes, inspired by animal patterns, to stay h 6 from enemy soldiers.

Now, technological advancement has opened up far more e 7 possibilities.

While military applications are the main f 8 , camouf lage is used in other areas, including architecture. Tower Inf inity in Korea was given building permission in 2013.

The 450-meter-tall skyscraper will activate hundreds of LED screens on one side of the building connected to cameras on the o 9 side. These will project ( 投射 ) images of the view behind the tower, making the skyscraper d 10 —but only from certain angles.
