For much of the 20th century, Shanghai’s Suzhou Creek was a smelly riverside. Families lived in the small boats that c 1 its waters from bank to bank. Infectious diseases spread t 2 the area as a result of water pollution.
In recent years Suzhou Creek has taken on an entirely new look. It is being made into a new destination for shopping, strolling ( 散步 ) and living. It is well-equipped to j 3 the likes of Paris’s Canal Saint-Martin as an agreeable urban waterfront ( 滨水地区 ).
The rehabilitation ( 整 治 ) of Suzhou Creek dates b 4 to 1993, when a sewage ( 污 水 ) treatment plant became operational. Since 2002, with the capabilities of the sewage treatment system constantly being upgraded, the main stream of the creek has been cleansed ( 清洁 ) of its black and smelly pollutants. During the past six years, water quality throughout the system has also been greatly i 5 by the cleanup of over 2,000 riverways in 12 districts across the city. Duckweed ( 浮萍 ) and freshwater f ish have returned to its waters.
Research from the United Nations Environment Programme reveals that half of the world’s 500 largest rivers have been seriously depleted ( 使干涸 ) or polluted. The comprehensive cleanup project for the 125-kilometer-long Suzhou Creek is an example the world can f 6 , said a report released during the fourth session of the United Nations Environment Assembly in March.
To make the creek’s waterfront more inviting to the public, stage four of the Suzhou Creek rehabilitation project is in full swing ( 正处于高潮 ). While this is certainly a noble aim, heritage advocates are w 7 that traces of Shanghai’s days as a treaty port ( 通商口岸 ) are disappearing in the process. However, according to the chief designer Michael Grove, “All the historic structures will be preserved and reused, mainly for c 8 purposes.” As a model, he points to the successful transition of a disused textile mill ( 纺织厂 ) into the popular M50 arts district, a warren ( 道路错综复杂的区域 ) of contemporary art galleries that lies further up the creek.
That m 9 visitors will still be able to stroll Suzhou Creek from the 1911 Garden Bridge ( 外白渡桥 ) to the 1924 Post Off ice which retain the essence of old Shanghai. Minus, of c 10 , the stink ( 恶臭 ).
