Passage 18

Passage 18

学霸导读 过度依赖数码产品会不会导致智力障碍?科学家们的研究结果怎么说呢?

Our digital devices may be c 1 edge technology, but they are also at the root of a massive health concern. Find out how the term “digital dementia ( 数码失智症 )” has quickly become a real medical term.

When was the last time that you dialed ( 拨打 ) a phone number from memory? It probably depends on how long you’ve been using technology like a cellphone. While some g 2 can recall ( 回忆 ) the days of memorizing phone numbers, it’s possible that members of Generation Z have never had to remember a single contact ( 联系人 ). Why is this? Because smartphones offer quick and convenient ways for storing and accessing information. There is no need to memorize anything. But this isn’t without consequence. As digital devices develop, more and more users’ h 3 reliance on them may be having crippling ( 严重的 ) effects. “Digital dementia” is the term being used by medical professionals to identify some of these effects.

Some professionals like Jim Kwik, an expert in memory improvement and brain performance, are taking a c 4 look at this effect. Kwik describes digital dementia like:“... we’re outsourcing ( 外包 ) our brains to our smart devices.” He continues, “We’re so reliant ( 依赖 ) on our smartphones that our smartphones are making us stupid.” As medical studies chart the decline in memory and cognitive ( 认 知 的 ) skills among smartphone users, a c 5 is made between symptoms ( 症 状 ) associated with dementia.

The seriousness of overuse becomes apparent when you consider just how young smartphone users are becoming. The author and speaker Simon Sinek points out that young minds “Are not ready for it! Their minds cannot cope with the dopamine ( 多巴胺 )”. Consequently, the overstimulation ( 过度刺激 ) of screens and sounds lead to addiction ( 成瘾 ) more o 6 than not. So now parents, teachers and managers are asking how to handle the inf lux ( 涌入 ) of young people with this kind of addiction.

Obviously smartphones aren’t all bad. They’re incredibly convenient, and the connectivity they create cannot be t 7 for granted. The key is to f igure out how to strike a balance between usage and nonuse.
