Passage 30

Passage 30

学霸导读 考上大学就能更容易地融入“上流社会”的圈子了吗?

Not long ago, a Weibo post led to a massive ( 大规模的 ) online debate. A college freshman ( 大一新生 ) c 1 that her mother only agreed to give her 2,000 yuan each month for living expenses when she asked for 4,500 yuan. She said, “My school is in a new f irst-tier ( 一线的 ) city and I need money for make-up and clothes.” While there is something w 2 with her reasoning ( 推论 ), the issue today is not about materialism ( 物质主义 ), but about the goals and desires of the youth.

The Guardian ( 《卫报》 ) recently published an article by Daniella Adeluwoye. Coming from a working-class family, she believed that her dreams had come true when she entered Cambridge University. In her f irst four days at her new school, Daniella r 3 that her expectations were very different from the reality. Many of her schoolmates at Cambridge had come from wealthy families. They were able to pursue their dreams and had fun without having to worry about f iscal ( 财政的 ) responsibility, but Daniella and other working-class students cannot. The lives of these richer students became subjects both of admiration ( 羡慕 ) and desire. Research also shows that students from wealthier backgrounds g 4 on to earn more money than those from working-class backgrounds, creating a vicious cycle ( 恶性循环 ).

I have read many of the comments and articles about the Chinese girl’s controversial ( 引起争论的 ) topic. Some criticize her for being greedy ( 贪婪 ) or spoiled; others argue that her parents are to blame for not teaching her f iscal responsibility. In fact, neither of them should take f 5 responsibility for it. Upward social mobility ( 社会流动 ) is something we all desire. Sometimes, new clothes, make-up or even a stylish haircut are n 6 to enter a different social circle ( 社交圈 ). What’s more important, working hard on your education will help you achieve that goal.

In this age of the Internet and social media, the youth are exposed to so many trendsetters ( 引领潮流的人 ) and inf luencers that their desires and goals may have changed. The only question is:

How do you c 7 to achieve them?
