Passage 28

Passage 28

学霸导读 成功,到底用结果衡量,还是用过程衡量?

“The only people for me are the mad ones, mad to live... who never yawn ( 打哈欠 ) or say a commonplace ( 习以为常的 ) thing, but burn, burn, burn...”

This quote comes from one of the most famous American novels of the 20th century, On the Road, by Jack Kerouac. Kerouac spent seven long and arduous ( 艰难的 ) years before he wrote a novel of his experiences.

Students often get bogged down ( 纠缠于 ) in the short-term successes of exam results, grades and other temporary marks of excellence. However, the m 1 of a successful life is not measured by such short-term goals. As someone in an American TV show said, “Life is the longest thing you will ever do.”

A case in point ( 一个恰当的例子 ) would be John Goodenough, one of the winners of the Nobel Prize in Chemistry. The American material scientist r 2 the honor at the old age of 97. This recognition ( 肯定 ) had been a long time in the making. The work that earned him the Nobel Prize goes all the way back to the 1970s. Back then, he was researching the properties ( 性质 ) of materials in attempts to engineer rechargeable ( 可充电的 ) batteries with higher energy density ( 密度 ). In 1980, Goodenough co-invented the lithium-ion battery, which revolutionized battery storage and is an essential part of a 3 every electronic device we use today. He had been told many times in his lengthy career ( 漫长的职业生涯 ) that he was too old to succeed, but had not for once taken it to heart. In fact, don’t e 4 him to slow down anytime soon. He continues to work in his lab every day, in the hopes of developing the next battery type that will eventually replace gas.

When Jack Kerouac wrote his book, he was not looking to change the world. He was looking to e 5 what it meant to be creative, to hold a dream so fast that he wanted nothing but to share it with the world. Those are the hopes and dreams that make Goodenough and Kerouac the inspirations ( 启发灵感的人或事物 ) for f 6 generations. Though the time they spent on the road was long and uncertain, the product of their experiences was more than worth the e 7 . So blaze ( 发出耀眼光芒 ) down that road, so that others may have a light to follow.
