Passage 32
学霸导读 在人工智能时代,人文思考更为珍贵。
I was born in the latter part of the last century, and like many of my friends, was i 1 in different science f iction ideas and technologies. We loved its futuristic ideas and high-minded ( 高尚的 ) prophecies ( 预言 ). But there is one theme in science f iction that has always troubled me: when technology subverts ( 颠覆 ) its creators.
I’ve been involved in dozens of technology projects. I have to admit that seldom in our design or business discussions have we spent much time on the potential negative impact of our work on the world. I 2 , in most cases we just create technology because we see a need, or to solve a problem.
Technology has been r 3 for an unprecedented ( 史无前例的 ) age of distraction. Recently while driving, I saw signs that said, “Next texting stop is three miles ahead. Don’t text and drive.” Most states have already banned texting while driving, and yet we h 4 almost weekly of traff ic accidents caused by drivers tapping on smartphones.
I don’t believe Steve Jobs dreamed the smartphones would lead to this level of distraction. I don’t think Mark Zuckerberg, when he created Facebook, e 5 how addictive Facebook would become. And I don’t think Niantic, the creators of Pokémon Go, thought their augmented reality ( 增强现实 ) app would cause accidents. ( Shortly after its launch in July 2016, two people walked off a cliff while playing the game. )
In a recent Harvard Business Review, a piece entitled “Liberal Arts ( 人文科学 ) in the Data Age”, writes about the importance of reconnecting a liberal arts mindset with the engineering approach. Many of today’s engineers have been so f 6 on creating new technologies that they pay little attention to unintended ( 意料之外的 ) long-term outcomes. At this point all tech companies should start getting serious about the need to hire people with backgrounds in areas such as anthropology ( 人类学 ), psychology and philosophy.
As a parent and grandparent, I admit I need to be more proactive ( 积极主动的 ) about selfpolicing ( 自我监管 ) while using modern technologies. My hope is that we can all move a little more in that d 7 , creating technology that is both impactful and thoughtful for our lives and the world.
