北洋大学法科——中国最早的法学教育机构，孕育近代法学家和近代律师的摇篮。光绪二十五年（1899），第一批中国未来的法学家和律师毕业。

Law Department of Beiyang University——the earliest legal education institution in China, gave birth to modern jurists and modern lawyers.In 1899, the first batch of Chinese future jurists and lawyers graduated.

鸦片战争以后，国门洞开，中国被迫纳入资本主义世界体系。伴随着康有为、梁启超的变法维新，盛宣怀于光绪二十一年八月（1895年10月）创办了天津北洋西学学堂（即著名的北洋大学，今天津大学前身），并开设了法科，招收与西方接触较早的天津及东南沿海等地的学生，同时聘任洋教习，如讲授法律的美籍学者林文德（天津注册的职业律师）、讲授世界史的任纳福等。全英文的授课以及丰富且处于学术前沿的律法总论、罗马律例、万国公法、商务律例、格致学、身理学、国策学等课程，为法科学生从事政治或法律工作作好了充分的准备。一代代的法科毕业生也为日后的汇通中西、法制变革、开启民智、民族抗争作出了巨大的贡献。

After the Opium War, the gate of the country was opened and China was forced to join the world system.Following the reforms of Kang Youwei and Liang Qichao, Sheng Xuanhuai opened the Tianjin Western Studies School (renamed Beiyang University,the predecessor of Tianjin University today) and recruited students from Tianjin and the southeast coast that had earlier contacts with the West.At the same time,foreign teachers were hired, such as American scholar Edgar Pierce Allen (registered professional lawyer of Tianjin) who teaches law, Renocg who teaches world history,etc.The English-language teaching and the rich and academic frontier law,Roman law, universal law, business law, Gezhi, Shenli, national policy and other courses, provided a sufficient basis for law students to engage in politics or law.Generations of law graduates have also made great contributions to the future integration of China and the West, the reform of the legal system, the opening of the people's wisdom, and the national struggle.(https://www.daowen.com)

光绪二十五年（1899），天津北洋大学堂颁发了第一届毕业证书。诞生在天津的中国第一张大学文凭——“钦字第壹号”文凭授予了王宠惠，他后来也成为了民国第一法学家。优秀的毕业生还有日后成为北洋大学校长的赵天麟、革命先驱张太雷、联合国国际法院大法官徐谟、著名法学家吴经熊等。另外，1912年毕业的法科学生很多都成为了天津著名的执业律师，其中包括钱俊（曾为周恩来领导学生运动被捕审判案辩护）、张务滋（著名华洋商务律师）、贾文范（中国第一个翻译、研究《罗马法》并出版译著的律师）、吴大业、苏企田等。民国初年的北洋大学法科毕业生引领并开拓了中国司法界和律师业的实务，为中国律师的发展写下了浓墨重彩的一笔。

In 1899, Tianjin Beiyang University issued the first graduation certificate.The first university diploma in China, the “Qinzi No.1”, born in Tianjin, was awarded to Wang Chonghui, who later became the number one jurist in the Republic of China.Outstanding graduates include Zhao Tianlin, who will become president of Beiyang University, revolutionary pioneer Zhang Tailei, Justice Xu Mo of United Nations International Court of Justice, and famous jurist Wu Jingxiong.In addition, many law students who graduated in 1912 became well-known practicing lawyers in Tianjin,including Qian Jun (who used to defend Zhou Enlai's arrest and trial for leading the student movement), Zhang Wuzi (famous Chinese and foreign business lawyer), and Jia Wenfan (Chinese first lawyer who translated, studied and published the translation of Roman Law), Wu Daye, Su Qitian, etc.The Beiyang University law graduates in the early years of the Republic of China led and pioneered the practice of China's judicial circle and the lawyer industry, and wrote a strong mark in the history of the development of Chinese lawyers.
