Reading Ⅰ An Attractive Place—Yuyuan Garden景点介绍——豫园

Yuyuan is a pleasant classical Chinese garden,a garden of peace and com fort in meaning. It was built by a local official Pan Yunduan as the private garden for his father.Pan Yunduan was the governor of Sichuan Province during the Ming Dynasty. The building of the garden began in 1559 and was completed in 1577.It boasts a long history ofmore than four centuries. It covers an area of over 20,000 square meters and is divided into some thirty different scenes.Pavilions, towers, rockeries and goldfish ponds are connected by arched bridges, and twisting corridors and passages. The picture of them showsmuch originality in giving a wide view in a small limited space.Buildings in the garden with fine brick designs and woodcarvings are characteristic of South China's architectural style of the Ming and Qing dynasties.

One scene is the Hall for Summoning Spring, used by the uprising army of the“Small Sword Society”in 1853 as their headquarter in the northern part of the old city.Since the 16th century, the garden has gone through many changes and suffered from repeated damages. On the eve of the liberation of old China, itwas reduced to a wasteland. When new China was founded, itwas refurbished and opened to the public as a place of popular resort in Shanghai.

Yuyuan Garden is located at the heart of the Old Town,a few blocks southwest of the Bund in downtown Shanghai(nearest Metro:Nanjing Donglu, which is still amile away).Themain entrance and ticketwindow(Tel.021-63555032)are on the north shore of the Huxin Ting pond.It is open daily from 8:30 a.m.to 5:00 p.m.(last-minute ticket4:45 p.m.),and the admission is RMB 30(S|3.75).The least crowded time to visit is in the earlymorning.Allow two hours for a leisurely tour of this site.
