10.1 Introduction

In the past，with shallower excavations，the influence of excavation on the surrounding environment was not great.Recently，with the increase of excavation depth and scale in urban areas，the magnitude and extent of ground settlement increases，which frequently damages the adjacent buildings.Building damage assessment has been discussed in Chapter 5，and this chapter will introduce methods to the protection of adjacent buildings by means of design and during construction.
