10.2.3 Taking advantage of corner effect

10.2.3 Taking advantage of corner effect

As elucidated in Section 5.2.2.2,with the lateral stiffness and the resulting arch effect around corners, deformation of diaphragm walls and ground settlement around comers are both smaller than those in the central section. The comers for soldier piles, sheet piles, and bored piles, which are not continuous in the horizontal direction and have no lateral stiffness, accordingly,do not have much difference in deformation or ground settlement from the central section. Thus,if the building is located at a comer or on the shorter side(see Figure 10.2),diaphragm walls can be utilized to take advantage of comer effects for the protection of buildings.
