1.The country doctor's memory was record of the grieves of the countryside as a whole.

—— Arthur E.Hertzler, 1870——1946

2.The true test of national medical progress is what the country doctor is.

—— S.Weir Mitchell, 1829——1914

3.The small town needs the best and not the worst doctor procurable. For the country doctor has only himself to rely on: he cannot in every pinch hail specialist, expert, and nurse. On his own skill knowledge, resourcefulness, the welfare of his patient altogether depends. The rural district is therefore entitled to the best-trained physician that can be induced to go there.

—— Abraham Flexner, 1866——1959

4.The cost of new devices and training for new procedures is too overwhelming for rural or community hospitals where they have neither the patient load nor the money to invest in new equipment.

—— Richard M.Stava(https://www.daowen.com)

5.For some rural physicians a good surgeon is one from whom your patient always returns with one of his abdominal organs missing.A bad surgeon is one who does the opposite.

6.Another rural law: as long as the patient has an appendix, a gallblader, a uterus and two ovaries, you refer him to the local surgeon.Once these organs are gone you refer to the university.

7.The common perception is that mortalities after an operation in a rural hospital are because "of the inexperienced surgeon or poor care" while if the patient dies in the Ivory Tower then he dies despite "the best efforts of the excellent doctors in the great hospital."

8.[About managing acutely injured patients in US rural hospitals]: If you ship them away they'll accuse you of laziness, cowardice, or losing income for the hospital, but if you treat them locally they'll accuse you of being a 'cowboy' or endangering the patient.
