Dialogue
The third D refers to a new pedagogy on the basis of negotiation and communication between lecturers and students. It is a dialogic approach in which both lecturers and students play the roles through interaction regardless of the argument who should be the centre.
According to Kumarawadiaru(2005)we have entered a postmethod era, which means that our attention is no longer paid to the teaching methods but more complicated issues regarding curriculum, sociocultural context, learners’autonomy and application of technology.Hence the language teacher’s choice is not a matter of jumping band-wagons from audiolingual method, communicative language teaching, natural method and so on but updating their knowledge about theories of language, language learning and new trends of pedagogies which used in the application in language classrooms. In terms of using a new pedagogy,it is suggested that not only lecturers of CLT but also the two cohorts of CHBS and NCBS should make contributions to the learning process.A constant and continuing dialogue is needed between lecturers and students on what are the most appropriate approaches to achieve the maximum learning outcomes in various stages of CLT.Based on the difference of learners’needs, interests, motives and learning styles and the dynamic of curricula with a streaming of two cohorts of students, the productive classroom interactions should be the priority of the performance by both lecturers and students.
In addition to creating a new pedagogy in the class of CTL,other new channels of learning Chinese need to be explored and used after the class which will overcome the lack of teaching hours associate with the difficult features of Chinese language. For example,as early as 1998,Warschauer and Healey stated that computer-assisted language learning(CALL)had become a welcomed technique widely used throughout the world. At present, the rapid technological and pedagogical developments let computer technology more fully integrate into the language learning process(Rahimpour,2011).More developments in networked communication, multimedia and artificial intelligence has also created a potentially crucial role for all kinds of electronic devices in second/foreign language classroom.Abundant comprehensive resources are shared without a limitation of time and space, and innumerable exercises and games can be used for CLT.These resources provide an inclusive learning environment for the diverse groups of Chinese language students, serve the purpose of accompanying the teaching and learning process and enable students to independently learn both in class and after class. Moreover, online distance teaching and learning has been added on top of the traditional face-to-face teaching and has become popular in second language teaching in Australia due to its flexibility. In spite of the fact that online Chinese language teaching shows a slower development comparing to other European languages in Australian universities, cooperation to develop resource of online teaching with China and other countries in the world will change the current situation.
In recent years,Chinese immersion programs are among the fastestgrowing areas of language teaching in Australian schools and universities.A number of Australian universities and their lecturers of CLT have been working hard to facilitate the development of study abroad program for their students. There is unanimous perspective from both CHBS and NCBS that an immersion study experience is greatly beneficial to students in achieving true proficiency in Chinese and better understanding of Chinese culture. The longer students stay, the higher level of progress in terms of communicative competence and cultural awareness they show when they come back to Australia.Without any doubts, the student would take great advantages from immersion study program, and it is very attractive to students, particularly NCBS.Needless to say,its implantation is facing challenges. Most of in-country study program is fully or partly funded by Australian universities depending on the types of the program under the government’s New Columbo Plan. However, both consideration of time and finance became the biggest barrier for many applicants.New ways of immersion study should be also explored.
