Profiling the Language Program

Profiling the Language Program

Another important knowledge type is knowledge of educational contexts, which refers to institutional, local, and actual context of teaching(Shuman,1987).Following this line of thinking, teaching is more than teaching the language;it means engaging and involving the school community and beyond. It also means that we need to“talk the talk and walk the walk”.What can we do to achieve this end?A common strategy adopted by many experienced language teachers in Australia is to routinely organise a multinational Gala Day or a language day(e.g.,Chinese Day)when the whole school is involved in a fullypacked day of fun cultural activities such as a fashion parade, arts and crafts, and traditional music and dancing.

The whole school engagement is an effective way to profile the language program, and with it,the culture of the target language.
