Abstract:Based on the experience of developing innovative multimedia technology for the use of language teaching in a Chinese basic interpreting skills unit in a university, this chapter will examine the application of this system,SmartClass+,and the experience of using this new multimedia technology in conjunction with traditional interpreting training activities. This new technology helps teachers manage their classes and can be used to ensure that students have sufficient opportunities to actively practice and hone their Chinese-English speaking, listening, reading and writing skills. This chapter will use the constructivism learning theory as the framework in comparing the Chinese interpreting teaching in a multimedia-based learning(MBL)environment with traditional interpreting teaching.Furthermore, extracts from a separate yet related study conducted on interpreting learning in an MBL environment will be used to demonstrate the practical implications of the innovative changes in interpreting teaching. This chapter will discuss the role of this new technology, the significance of enhancing intercultural communication skills between the two languages through interpreting teaching and learning in an MBL environment, and aim to make language teachers aware of the strategies of using SmartClass+software in an effective manner.Additionally, the chapter will also discuss the difficulties encountered when using SmartClass+software in this way,as well as suggest solutions for the problems encountered.
