The First Cycle(About 2 Weeks):Driving Cycle

The design and goal of the training:

Each week,in the practical session, students are required to practice air writing characters for half an hour. The purpose of this practice is to help the students to form the habit of character writing,to get a direct feeling towards the basic strokes and their writing order;and to preliminarily establish the connection in between the symbol, sound and meaning in the students’brain.

Description of the training:

Firstly, let the students imagine that there is a piece of paper of half a square metre in front of them, and then ask the students to write on it with a 50 cm-long writing stick. The teacher guides the students to do air writing practice following the animated character writing on the screen;and the students are required to make as big character writing movement as possible[with the use of their imaginations to enlarge the characters they write and the writing movement they take, the synaptogenesis, synaptic potentiation, and reorganization of movement representations,as well as a reorganization of neural circuitry within the motor cortex can be induced(Adkins et al.,2006)].While writing the strokes, students need to count the stroke orders along(to produce the intuitive concepts of the strokes and their orders in their minds). Each character is written several times(due to the time limit,3 times is recommended). When finishing writing each character,it is read once, the students read after the teacher the words formed by this character once, the English meaning of the word issaid once. The students repeat the processseveral times(this exercise helps the students to connect the character to its pronunciation and meaning closely).

For example, when learning the character of“漂”the students are asked to follow the teacher air writing it,stroke by stroke while counting the stroke order. When finishing writing it each time,it is read once;the students then need to read after the teacher,“漂亮(pretty)”and repeat it several times. In this way,the students need to practice all the new characters and words(about 25 words)in the lesson. In order to make the whole process more interesting and livelier, the teacher may tell some stories or interesting events in relation to the characters or words;or reinforce the students’memories on the characters from different perspectives and angles, for example, let the students take turns to write a stroke or a radical until a character is completed, and then ask the students to read out the character and speak out its meaning, etc.
