5 Classroom Language Use in CL2 Teaching:Designing from a Learner’s Perspective

Yeow Wah Fong and Yeng Seng Goh

Abstract:Classroom language is often the first exposure to the target language for a beginner learner in Chinese as a second language(CL2)class.Learners,on the one hand, listen to the teacher using the target language to give instructions,to explain classroom activities, and to encourage them to complete learning tasks, while on the other hand, use the target language to communicate with the teacher.Classroom language hence plays a pivotal role in facilitating the process of teaching and learning.Effective communication between teachers and learners has a direct impact on the implementation of classroom activities and the completion of teaching and learning tasks. It is also a key to establishing a positive relationship between teachers and learners in the classroom and to enhancing the quality of classroom experience. At present, most of,if not all,Chinese textbooks for beginner learners provide a list of classroom expressions, without any classification based on its communicative function.Taking into account the needs and the base language of the second language beginners, this chapter proposes a framework for classroom language use in CL2 teaching.
