Theories
Some scholars, who studied Chinese reading, discovered that the process of writing characters can promote learners’character recognition and reading ability.Guan et al.(2011)compared the difference between character writing method and character reading method and found that character writing obviously enhances adult Chinese learners’ability in character recognition and reading,as well as their ability to link characters with their meanings. They believe that character writing reinforced the orthographic(glyph)representation(because writing reinforced spatial visual information and motor sense memory required).Cao et al.(2013)found that the training method of character copying can effectively improve character reading scores and can promote the establishment of specialized neural networks for Chinese character reading.
Another study(Adkins et al.,2006)also found that the neural networks established by the brain are different when reading Chinese characters and English words. It holds that when writing Chinese characters,a higher quality representation is established in the visual spatial structure and orthography of Chinese characters, and the interaction of motion perception information can be enhanced.Chinese character writing also enhances the connection between characters and meanings.Undoubtedly, these research results have provided solid evidence that there is a positive connection between character writing and good learning effects in the process of character learning.Furthermore, this has also thrown some light on a possible cause-effect relation between the physical body movement and the learning of Chinese characters.
