9 Driving,Progressing and Consolidating Chinese-Character-Writing Teaching Method:An Exploration

Abstract:Chinese character teaching has been an important research topic in the teaching of Chinese as a second language.Although many results from the research have been applied to the teaching practice,students who have mother tongues with alphabetic writing systemsstill face,as we observed in the teaching practice,a significant challenge in their learning not only because of the huge difference between alphabetically-based writing systems and the way of writing Chinese character,but also because of the stressful feeling caused by the difficulty of Chinese writing.There is little doubt that such stressful feeling often leads to students’anxiety toward character writing.In response to such an anxiety problem,the authors have innovated a new way of teaching Chinese character with reference to the principles of sport psychology and educational psychology as well as relevant research results from the Chinese character teaching.This innovation enables the authors to develop what may be termed the“Driving,Progressing and Consolidating Chinese-Character-Writing Teaching Method”or DPC method.This chapter aims to illustrate this innovation and offer an analysis of the verification and test process.
