Conclusion and Prospects
The above survey and analysis have initially shown the efficacy of the“Driving,Progressing and Consolidating Chinese-Character-Writing Teaching Method”.In the year after the conducting of this teaching process and the postteaching analysis(2019),the authors of this paper made a further investigation on the efficacy of this teaching method. The method employed is:in the first semester of 2019,the students in Chinese 3,who participated in the above training(in Chinese 2 in 2018)and those who entered Chinese 3 directly without participating in the DPC Chinese-Character-Writing training, were observed and compared. The results of our observations have shown that the students who received the training have smooth writing;their facial expressions are easy and pleasant when writing Chinese characters;the writing speed is suitable, namely 6 up to 10 Chinese characters can be written per minute, while the training nonparticipants can only write 3 to 5 characters every minute;the training participants felt easier to complete the writing task(although amongst the Chinese characters they wrote there were a few missing or wrong ones),the inter-frame structure of the characters is not offset or misplaced, and the fonts are mostly clear and neat;the training non-participants,on the other hand, felt it difficult to finish the writing task, and furthermore,in the completed part of the task, there were lots of errors in regards to wrong and/or misplaced radicals, constituent elements and inter-frame structure of the characters.
In summary, the authors believe that on the early stage of teaching Chinese characters to the students whose mother tongues are alphabetic languages, the introduction of the DPC Chinese-Character-Writing Teaching Method, which we developed based on the theoretical framework of muscle memory, reinforcement, achievement motivation, and self-efficacy,is indeed feasible and effective. The reason why it can be effective is that this training method, unlike the traditional simple memorization mode in teaching Chinese character writing, successfully mobilized the physical and psychological functions that students often overlook in the process of learning Chinese characters. The DPC Chinese-Character-Writing Teaching Method which is based on muscle movement and emotional stimulation can drive the synapse in the students’brains, making changes to them and forming a new neural circuit. All this will change the students’old habits of employing the metalinguistic skills from their alphabetic mother tongues to deal with characters and eventfully build up a new skill system for learning a character language.
