The Interpreting Unit in SmartClass+

Tutorials(that run for 120 minutes/week)in the“Chinese-English Basic Interpreting”unit is conducted within the ROBOTEL SmartClass+laboratories.With regards to the nature of interpreting，translator and theorist Danic Seleskovitch has famously said:“Interpreting is communication”(Seleskovitch，1992:8).The combination of man and machine within the classroom setting can not only promote the communication between teachers and students，but also utilise the multimedia network to break the time and space boundaries of the traditional classroom teaching method，and construct an open and flexible teaching space.Machine-based dialogue simulation interpreting exercises are the main focus of such classes.The exercises are classified by topic，and the content ranges from shallow to complex.The modern multimedia teaching structure provides students with an ideal learning environment，and the classroom content and teaching methods are flexible and diverse.The teaching content can be displayed with text，graphics，charts，animations，etc，and the information is available in both eye-catchingly visual or auditory forms.Students can master tasks at their own pace and choose the suitable content，chapters and related exercises according to their ability，and use listening，speaking，writing，and translation tasks to implement the training of various interpreting skills.
