Assessment and Evaluation

12.Assessment and Evaluation

Assessment and evaluation in translation teaching have always been a“bottleneck”,because when a translation course sees an increase in student number but lacks teaching staff, marking becomes a major issue.According to the current requirements on course offering in Monash University, each student will have assessments that amount to 3 000 words(not including end-of-semester exam). In other words, when there are over 1 000 enrolled students in translation units, the marking task on all teaching staff would reach to over 3 000 000 words in each semester.Obviously, the need for timely marking and feedback of assignments puts great pressure on teachers. In face of this new challenge,we need to seek new routes to enable assessments and evaluations that are both efficient and effective. Many attempts have been made in this regard, including computer-based marking and information and communication technology(ICT).But so far,to meet the current exercise volume and teaching objectives, conventional marking stays the only effective way.
