5.Limitations and Issues That Need Attention

This section explores the potential issues that may arise in using an MBL environment for interpreting teaching, despite its benefits.Though the introduction of SmartClass+ has greatly reformed the existing model of interpreting learning,it must be emphasized that SmartClass+does not promote an entire shift away from the traditional approach to interpreting learning.Instead,SmartClass+seeks to marry the beneficial elements of the existing method with the resourcefulness, efficiency and effectiveness delivered with the modern approach. However, given the advanced technology utilized in the operation of its software, technical issues, amongst other problems, are unavoidable when using SmartClass+.

The use of multimedia for interpreting teaching has transformed the traditional classroom model, from the static role of textbook-teacher-student to the multi-role relationship of student-multimedia-teacher-textbook aid, etc. It also plays a role in promoting and stimulating students’motivation and enthusiasm for learning and is a practical teaching method. With the application of SmartClass+in interpreting teaching, any identifiable progress is reflected in the fluency of interpreting expressions, the accuracy of wording, learning motivation and interest, listening comprehension, shorthand ability and task reaction speed. As expected, some issues were encountered whilst using this software to teach:

The skills training required for oral interpreting cannot be replaced completely by modern information technology.Students look at computer screens for the majority of the class duration, and the lively human-to-human interactions found in traditional teaching, including tone, gestures and eye contact, are indispensable for learners because they comprise the very essence of teacher-student interaction. The teaching process is not merely the process of imparting knowledge and developing abilities, but also the process of emotional communication and the formation of students’personalities.Too much humancomputer dialogue will limit the face-to-face communication between teachers and students or between students themselves, which is not conducive to students’ability to develop their interpersonal communication skills.

Though the multimedia-language labs are highly technical, and the staff are required to be highly mobile in order to manage it.Therefore,it may be unsuitable in cooperating with teachers during class development and production, which may sometimes bring an extra burden to teachers’course preparation and implementation.

Compared with traditional interpreting teaching methods, the virtual classroom of modern information technology can make it difficult for teachers to temporarily adjust the teaching content according to feedback received from students,or if sudden circumstances arise regarding the classroom equipment. Therefore, teachers must not only have the ability to operate and use the multimedia-teaching resources, but also be able to cope with unexpected conditions that affect the equipment, such as power outages, crashes, system disturbances, and loss of assessment-recording storage,so as not to waste valuable teaching time.Nevertheless, the traditional teaching emphasizes the certainty and universality of knowledge,as well as its analysis and abstraction. This is necessary and reasonable at the initial stage of learning,as it is necessary to avoid and replace making general mistakes, otherwise it will cause confusion in teaching. To promote situational teaching,it is necessary to strive for specificity and authenticity, but it cannot totally deny any resulting abstraction and generalization.

In summary, the application of interpreting teaching in an MBL environment should avoid completely abandoning traditional teaching methods.Teachers should adequately combine the two in the teaching process, learn from each other’s strengths, and use multimedia technology according to the actual situation at hand to optimize the teaching effect. In addition, focus should also be placed on accelerating the development and maintenance of interpretingteaching software and hardware systems to fully meet the needs of interpreting teaching.
