Conversation 1

Questions1to4are based on the following conversation. At the end of the conversation, you will be given 20 seconds to answer the questions. Now listen to the conversation.

W:Hi,Jack.Tomorrow’s the big day!You must be excited about going to France for your first international conference.

M:The trip,yes,but not the preparation.

W:What do you need to do except pack?

M:You know how you always feel so awful whenever you make a big change in time zones? This time I’m trying an anti-jet-lag program so I’ll be alert even for the first day’s lectures.

W:But how can you avoid jet lag With that late flight and a six-hour difference in time,it’s bound to take you a couple of days to adjust.

M:Well this program’s supposed to get your body to feel like it’s in the new time zone before you leave. The theory is that the food you eat actually tells your body when to be active and when to be restful,so changing your diet can help you be ready for the time change. You have to alternate feasting and fasting...you know sometimes eat a lot, sometimes just a little.

W:OK.Now I see why you’re not enjoying the preparation.I can’t quite picture you fasting!

M:Actually the worst is already over. Two days before the flight, you’re supposed to have only:light meals and limit yourself to eight hundred calories.

W:That must have been tough.

M:Yeah, but I’m making up for it today.Feast day is much better...though I still don’t get to eat any snacks after dinner.

W:Ah,Rachel, good to see you again. What can I do to help you

M:Well,as you know,I run a small company manufacturing children’s clothes.

W:Yes,and it’s doing rather well,if I remember correctly.

M:Yes,I’ve recently increased production, and I’m very happy with my sales figures. In fact,I’ve had some interest from overseas retailers wanting to sell my clothes.I’d also like to be able to buy materials from abroad. What I’d like to know is if I can make and accept payments in foreign currencies.

W:We offer full foreign exchange services,so there shouldn’t be a problem. We have an extensive foreign correspondent bank network so funds can easily be transferred worldwide.

M:So this bank is part of a network of foreign banks?

W:That’s right. The advantage is that payments can be made and received quickly and efficiently and at the lowest cost to you and your suppliers and purchasers. You can do this by wire transfer—it’s the fastest and safest way to transmit money around the world. And you reduce risk because you lock in the exchange rate and know the full cost of the transaction before the wire is sent.

M:What happens if a foreign customer wants to pay by check?

W:We offer foreign currency check conversions for a wide range of countries. All you have to do is to complete a foreign cash letter agreement and send it,along with the check and a deposit slip,to our foreign check processing center.

M:So I shouldn’t have any problems dealing with foreign currencies.Thank you.

Passage 1

One of the biggest challenges facing employers and educators today is the rapid advance of globalization. The market place is no longer national or regional, but extends to all corners of the world. And this requires a global ready workforce.Universities have a large part to play in preparing students for the 21st century labor market by promoting international educational experiences.

The most obvious way universities can help develop global workforce is byencouraging students to study abroad as part of their course.Students who have experienced another culture first hand are more likely to be global ready when they graduate.Global workforce development doesn’t always have to involve travel abroad. However,if students learn another language and study other cultures, they will be more global ready when they graduate.

It is important to point out that students also need to have a deep understanding of their own culture before they can begin to observe, analyze and evaluate other cultures. In multi-cultural societies, people can study each other’s cultures,to develop intercultural competencies, such as critical and reflective thinking, and intellectual flexibility. This can be done both through the curriculum and through activities on campus, outside of the classroom, such as art exhibitions, and lectures from international experts.

Many universities are already embracing this challenge, and providing opportunities for students to become global citizens.Students themselves, however, may not realize that when they graduate, they will be competing in a global labor market, and universities need to raise awareness of these issues amongst undergraduates.

Q1.What is one of the biggest challenges facing employers and educators today?

Q2.What should students do first before they can really understand other cultures?

Q3.What should college students realize according to the speaker?

Passage 2

William Shakespeare was christened in the market town of Stratford on Avon,Warwickshire,on April 26,1564;traditionally,his actual birthday was three days earlier,on St.George’s day,the same day as his death fifty-two years later. His father,John, was a respected middle-class trader, and his mother,Mary Arden, came from a family of local landowners. It seemed probable that young William received a fair education(for his day)at the local Grammar School;at the age of eighteen he married a girl eight years older than himself,Anne Hathaway, who gave him a child the following year and twins in 1585.Little else is known of his early life, and so we cannot tell what made him decide to leave Stratford in 1586 for London, where he stayed until 1611.In London he must soon have attracted attention, because by 1592 he was a popular enough writer and actor to be laughed at by an older dramatist as an uneducated Jack of all trades. He was mentioned as being among the principal actors of the city as early as 1598,and in 1599 we find that he was a member of the company running the Globe Theater, with one-tenth interest in the profits—showing a business sense rarely seen in his fellow writers. His popularity was indicated by the fact that not only were his own plays published under his name, which was a rare procedure in his day,but also plays by others were to be found attributed to him,as if to indicate that his name alone would promise a good sale.

Q4.When did William Shakespeare die?

Q5.When did Shakespeare and his wife have their first child?

Q6.Which one can we infer from the article?

Q7.Which of the following is true?

Passage 3

Silence is unnatural to man.He begins life with a cry and ends it in stillness. In between he does all he can to make a noise in the world, and he fears silence more than anything else.Even his conversation is an attempt to prevent a fearful silence. If he is introduced to another person, and a number of pauses occur in the conversation,he regards himself as a failure. He knows that ninety-nine percent of human conversations means no more than the buzzing of a fly,but he is anxious to join in the buzz and to prove that he is a man and not a waxwork figure. The aim of conversation is,for the most part,to communicate ideas it is to keep up the buzzing sound. There are,it must be admitted, different qualities of buzz;there is even a buzz that is as annoying as the continuous noise made by a mosquito. But at a dinner party one would rather be a mosquito than a quiet person. Most buzzing, fortunately,is pleasant to the ear,and some of it is pleasant even to the mind.He would be a foolish man if he waited until he had a wise thought to take part in the buzzing with his neighbors. Those who hate to pick up the weather as a conversational opening seem to me not to know the reason why human beings wish to talk.Very few human beings join in a conversation in the hope of learning anything new. Some of them are content if they are merely allowed to go on making a noise into other people’s ears. They have nothing to tell them except that they have seen two or three new plays or that they had food in a Swiss hotel. At the end of an evening, during which they have said nothing meaningful for a long time. They just prove themselves to be successful conversationalists.

Q8.What is people’s purpose in making conversation according to the author?

Q9.What do people usually talk to their neighbors according to the passage?

Q10.What is the author’s purpose in writing the passage?

Section 4

Self-image is the picture you have of yourself, the sort of person you believe you are.Included in your self-image are the categories in which you place yourself, the roles you play and other similar descriptors you use to identify yourself. If you tell an acquaintance you are a grandfather who recently lost his wife and who does volunteer work on weekends, several elements of your self-image are brought to light—the roles of a grandparent, widower and conscientious citizen.

But self-image is more than how you picture yourself;it also involves how others see you.Three types of feedback from others are indicative of how they see you conformation, rejection, and disconfirmation.Conformation occurs when others treat you in a manner consistent with who you believe you are.You believe you have leadership abilities and your boss put you in charge of a new work team.On the other hand, rejection occurs when others treat you in a manner that isinconsistent with yourself definition.Pierre Salinger was appointed senator from California but subsequently lost his first election. He thought he was a good public official, but the voters obviously thought otherwise—their vote was inconsistent with his self-concept.The third type of feedback is disconfirmation, which occurs when others fail to respond to your notion of self by responding neutrally.A student writes what he thinks is an excellent composition, but the teacher writes no encouraging remarks.Rather than relying on how others classify you, consider how you identify yourself. The way in which you identify yourself is the best reflection of your self-image.
