无意识中的社会意识
毕肖普继承了庞德、艾略特等人的诗歌创作的客观性原则，在诗歌中使用意象，重视社会问题的传统。她说过：“从政治上说，我认为自己是一个社会主义者，但我不喜欢社会意识的作品。”〔58〕他接着说：“简要地说，对社会问题和政治，我比三十年代更感兴趣。”〔59〕毕肖普的作品反映社会问题，只不过这种反映不是直接地披露，而是通过梦幻无意识、间接地反映。以下面两首诗为例：
《爱人躺着睡觉》（Love Lies Sleeping）〔60〕是毕肖普旅居法国时在巴黎写成的，反映大城市生活对人的负面影响。它是一首在醉梦状态下，用不同人称、不同视角写成的诗。说话人清晨睡眼惺忪地从床上往窗外望去。暗淡的月色、闪烁的霓虹灯下，这座城市像“一个大口瓶中的‘化学花园’，/颤抖又立起，/呈淡蓝、青绿和砖色/”。“化学花园”似是一个带有嘲讽的矛盾修饰语，比喻这个城市虽然美丽，但它是一个供试验用的、放有微生物的大烧瓶。各种颜色表明城市受到化学污染，居民们受到毒害。“接着，在西方，‘嘣’，冒出一团烟云，/‘嘣’，花球再次爆炸、开花。/并且，所有在工厂工作的工人，声音意味着危险，或者曾经是死亡，/在睡觉时翻转，/感到毛骨悚然。/”这首诗指涉了一个严重的社会问题，工业化使空气严重污染，事故频发，人民的生命财产得不到保障。诗中又说：“你会吃得很好，/吃他的心，吃他的、还有他的。”这说明城市不可靠，人际关系险恶，显示了诗人对社会的悲观与失望。
毕肖普曾在纽约的下段第七大道居住过，那里有日夜开工的印刷厂、制药厂。工厂的异味和嘈杂声，使她呼吸困难，很难入睡。《瓦里克街》（Varick Street）〔61〕这首睡梦诗真实地反映了纽约城环境污染，金钱万能、背信弃义，尔虞我诈的社会现象。全诗三节，每节最后的叠句都是：“并且我将出卖你，/当然出卖你、亲爱的，并且你也会出卖我。/”
《早餐的奇迹》（A Miracle for Breakfast）〔62〕写美国20世纪30年代经济萧条时期，人们从慈善机构领取面包、咖啡的场景：“六点钟，我们等着咖啡，/等着咖啡、赈济的面包，/会在阳台上放发，/像旧时的国王，或者像一个奇迹。/”说话者把赈济想象成圣餐，等待着像《新约》中耶稣出现，叫门徒将仅有的几个饼和几条鱼分发给几千个挨饿的民众，使他们都能吃饱的奇迹出现。〔63〕但是在诗的第四节：“我可以说，接下来，我看见并没有奇迹。/”
阿什利·布朗采访毕肖普时说：“这首诗具有动人的超现实主义品质。”毕肖普回答说：“噢，那是首有关大萧条的诗。大约在1936年，在排队领取赈济物资和男人们卖苹果后不久写成。那是我的一首社会意识的诗，一首关于饥饿的诗。”〔64〕毕肖普写饥饿，对饥民深表同情心，“因为她曾经和穷人一起生活过，实地了解贫穷者的状况……”〔65〕唐纳德·巴洛·斯托弗在《美国诗歌简史》中说：“正是人类伙伴热忱的同情才明显地构成毕肖普诗歌最令人喜爱的品质。这种同情使得她在对各类人嘲讽的同时，也使人们感到她对他们真正的爱。”〔66〕毕肖普对普通人的同情、恻隐之心，反映了她的道德观念，证明她是一个重视伦理道德的诗人。海伦·麦克尼尔说：“在一贯坚持的伦理道德含义上，也许她更像弗洛伊德。”〔67〕
另外，在《早餐的奇迹》这首诗中，耶稣没有出现，奇迹纯属幻想，可以证明她所说的：“关于宗教和这个通常的主题，自赫伯特时期以来，时代已经变了。我是不信宗教的，但是我以极大的喜悦阅读霍普金斯和赫伯特的诗。”〔68〕她在一个信奉宗教的环境中长大并受到影响，但“不信宗教”，说明她对想象的、非理性的东西，较之客观现实，还是摆在次要的地位；也说明她只是把梦幻、非理性作为诗歌创作的素材和主题，用以表达思想观念，传达经验、智慧或哲理，说明她与当年法国超现实主义是根本不同的。她与同时代的诗人也有不同，对当时盛行的自白诗，她明确表示“不喜欢”。毕肖普的诗歌虽然数量不多，但有独创和超前性，无怪乎洛威尔感到：“毕肖普的诗似乎属于下一个世纪。”〔69〕
毕肖普是美国历史上一位杰出的女诗人，在美国文学史上享有崇高的地位。她善于向优秀的英美及其他国家的诗人学习，继承英美诗歌的优良传统，又勇于创新。她关心社会，对普通人充满关爱与同情，坚持她的艺术和价值观。她写诗不受功利驱使，精益求精，寓意深刻，艺术完美。时至今日，她的这些品质仍然值得我们学习和借鉴。
