A Study ofārdūlakar
āvadāna,Sino-Indian Communications of Astronomy,
Calendar,and Literature
Abstract
ārdūlakar
āvadāna tells the story of a girl named
,from caste of Ca
ala,tribe of the Moda
ga,who pursued the Buddhist disciple Ānanda, and finally converted to Buddhism. There is a wealth of astrological divination in the story. On account of this avadāna,its Chinese translations have appeared since the third century C.E.,and Tibetan translations appeared in the ninth century, then since the nineteenth century, its Sanskrit manuscripts have been discovered successively. There are currently more than ten different versions, including translations.
This book is based on the early divination texts of the 28 nakatras(lunar mansions)in the parallel versions of the
ārdūlakar
āvadāna in Sanskrit,Tibetan, and Chinese. The study focus on the stories of previous and present lives, the multilingual versions, the calendar, the timing instruments, the characteristics of the nak
atras, the prophecy of divination, etc. The Sanskrit manuscripts of Central Asia preserved in the United Kingdom and Russia can be used as parallel texts to revise the writing of the critical edition. For example,we discover the knowledge errors of the nak
atras in day reckoning, the calendar data in the full moon day,and the special translations of the star names could also be traced back.As the earliest Indian astronomical historical material introduced to China, the study of
ārdūlakar
āvadāna not only has the significance of philological research, but also helps to examine the cultural exchanges between China and India from multiple dimensions of astronomy, calendar, and Buddhist literature.
