Instructional Enlightenment for Senior High School Translation
Considering the significance of formal translation of official document,translation related to the current national affairs has been increasingly appearing in senior high school test papers.Therefore,how to translate such material in a proper way,understandable to foreigners but also loyal to the original version,is of great significance.This article takes the official translation of the chairman's report as the object of study to point out some translation skills applicable to senior high school translations.
We divide the overall analysis into two parts,lexical features including Chinese characters and formality,and syntactic features including passive voice,imperative sentences and slogan-type sentences and component equivalence,to see what kinds of rules and principles have been applied to the translation of official report,thus helping teachers better understand the specific translation skills and learn how to instruct such principles to students.
Official documents come from the political activities carried out by relevant political organs,ministries,institutions and departments,including all kinds of communiqué,notification,work report,minutes of meetings and all kinds of legislative documents.The translation of those documents is responsible for precisely conveying national policies on domestic issues and foreign affairs,bearing on our national interests,images and status on the world arena.This work report delivered on the National Party Congress includes the conclusion of the past five-year's work experience and arrangement of work in the next five years made by the Communist Party of China,covering policies in politics,economics,culture,social development and ecology,thus making it an important channel for foreigners to better understand China's national conditions.
