皮尔斯是一个原创性的哲学家,他在科学探索基础上,依据批判常识论哲学和经院哲学实在论的背景,首次提出了经典实用主义的哲学观念。这种哲学观强调哲学是为确定信念提供方法,主要是为人们提供明确概念和语词的方法。根据实用主义的这一观念,皮尔斯构想了宏大的指号学理论,并把指号学归结为是逻辑学的另一个名称。
皮尔斯也是一个原创性的逻辑学家,他既在逻辑代数化的进程中贡献卓著,也为逻辑的图表化做了很多奇妙而且科学的构想。对皮尔斯指号学的探究,我们可以看到,逻辑可以用图表式来加以表述,皮尔斯为这种逻辑的图表表述提供了经典的样本,这就是皮尔斯的存在图表EGs:Alpha 图表、Beta 图表和Gamma 图表,以及晚年还在孜孜以求的Delta 图表。
特别值得一提的是,于20世纪50年代才算是成为较完善体系的模态逻辑,皮尔斯在他的EGs 中已经具有一些先知先觉的意识。命题逻辑的Alpha 图表,一阶逻辑的Beta 图表,加上描述模态的Gamma 图表,构成他关于逻辑的一个较为完美的体系。其中的Gamma 图表,从某种意义上讲,已经具备现代模态逻辑的雏形,皮尔斯的Gamma 图表为我们理解和研究模态逻辑提供了新的思路,也为我们理解美国的经典实用主义哲学提供了思路。
