二、俗语隐喻翻译对比

《红楼梦》中有大量的俗语、歇后语等使用了隐喻,成为《红楼梦》语言的重要特色之一(详见本书附录1)。俗语隐喻在“红楼”语境中发挥了不言而喻的重要作用(俗语发挥的重要作用在本书第二章第四节已有论述,此处不再赘述),但翻译的俗语是否具有相同的语境效应,还有待进一步细细考察。这些隐喻的翻译稍显复杂,往往需要更为深刻的联想,甚至需要一些文学、文化的佐证解释,才能被异语读者充分理解。据笔者的不完全统计,原著中的所有俗语隐喻并没有都在霍译本和杨译本中百分百被翻译出来,有的甚至直接省略了。俗语隐喻的不可译问题的确很值得细究一番。例如:

(鸳鸯)什么“好话”!宋徽宗的鹰,赵子昂的马,都是好画儿。(《红楼梦》第四十六回)

这是“誓绝鸳鸯偶”的鸳鸯面对其嫂劝说她嫁与贾赦为妾时所用的一句歇后语。在汉语中,“话”和“画”同音,用来怒斥其嫂所谓的“好话”,看起来只是简单的语音隐喻,但其实背后有着不小的文化信息量。宋徽宗擅长画鹰,赵子昂长于绘马,若说它们是好画儿,似乎顺理成章,怎么可能体现出鸳鸯的驳斥之意呢?这的确让人狐疑。实际上,宋徽宗为国君却醉心绘画,赵子昂身为宋人却为元朝官吏,单表其中一个或许是褒扬之意,但将两人连起来说,实则暗含讥讽之意。这一俗语隐喻在鸳鸯篇幅较长的驳斥之言中是比较显眼的,也很符合当时人物的对话心理,面对不顾自己生死、幸福的亲人,不屈不挠的鸳鸯已经心灰意冷,气愤到顶点。但霍译本和杨译本在处理时却不约而同地将其省去了。

(杨译)What's all this talk of“good news”and“good fortune”?

两位翻译大家相似的处理方法都照应了前文鸳鸯之嫂所说的“good news”和“wonderful news”,用意译的方法简单地传达了文意,而没有突出鸳鸯讲话的特点,这两句译文淹没在鸳鸯大段的驳斥语中,其语音隐喻“好话”“好画”没有被翻译出来,而背后的文化典故与深意的表达就更加无从谈起了。从隐喻的认知功能来讲,俗语之所以会发挥特定的认知功能,就在于它完成了从普通到特殊、从一般到具体的概念转换和认知联系。(The interpretation of the proverb is facilitated by the metaphor GENERICISSPECIFIC.)[2]相对沉寂的隐喻义在红楼叙事具体的语境,如“好话”“好画”中又被临时激活了,被赋予崭新的临时隐喻所指和隐喻义,从而参与小说叙事的展开。面对这样的俗语隐喻,“译或不译,真是个问题?”从原则上讲,这个俗语例子的翻译不存在技术上的操作问题,但同时可以肯定的是,即使翻译,也无法完全对等地将语音隐喻表达出来,增添注释势在必行,且这些注释并非三言两语可以说清,若因长段注释而打断了鸳鸯这一段滔滔不绝的叱骂,反而因小失大。在此,我们似乎也可以大胆揣测霍克斯先生和杨宪益先生面对这样的翻译时合理取舍的大智慧。

霍译本和杨译本面对俗语隐喻时,选择放弃不译的情形其实不常见,绝大多数情况下还是比较忠实地还原了原著的俗语隐喻的。比如在叙事语境相对完整的《红楼梦》第十三回,秦可卿临死前托梦与凤姐,在梦中对凤姐一番警示的叙事话语中整整出现了四则俗语:“月满则亏,水满则溢”“登高必跌重”“树倒猢狲散”“盛筵必散”。四则俗语表述不一,但语义主旨是一致的,对日后贾府衰败的命运给予了充分的警示和预示,秦可卿话语中充满隐喻哲思的几则俗语是后人解读《红楼梦》、确信贾家必散最重要的隐喻线索。两个译本基本保留了对这几则俗语隐喻的英译,以下是节选的译文材料,字体加粗部分为作者所添加,是对应的俗语英译:

(霍译)“So fond of sleep,Auntie?”said Qin-shi with a gentle smile.“I shall have to begin my journey today without you to see me off.But never mind!Since you cannot come to me,I have come to you instead.We two have always been so close,I could not have borne to leave you without saying good-bye.Besides,I have a last wish that you alone must hear,because I cannot trust anyone else with it.”“What is your wish?”Xi-feng heard herself asking.“You can trust me to carry it out for you.”“Tell me,Auntie,”said Qinshi,“how is it that you who are such a paragon among women that even strong men find more than their match in you can yet beignorant of the simple truths expressed in homely proverbs?Take this one:

The full moon smaller grows,full water overflows.

Or this:

The higher the climb,the harder the fall.

Our house has now enjoyed nearly a century of dazzling success.Suppose one day‘joy at its height engenders sorrow’.And suppose that,in the words of another proverb,‘when the tree falls,the monkeys scatter’.Will not our reputation as one of the great,cultured households of the age then turn into a hollow mockery?”Qin-shi's question made Xi-feng feel uneasy,though at the same timeinspiring a deep respect in her for her niece's foresight.

(杨译)“How you love to sleep,aunt!”cried Keqing playfully.“I'm going home today,yet you won't even see me one stage of the way.But we'vealways been so close,Icouldn't go without coming to say goodbye.Besides,there's something I'd like done which it's nouse my entrusting to anyone else.”

“Just leave it to me,”replied Xifeng,rather puzzled.

“You're such an exceptional woman,aunt,that even men in official belts and caps are no match for you.Is it possible you don't know the saying that‘the moon waxes only to wane,water brims only to overflow,’and‘the higher the climb the harder the fall’?Our house has prospered for nearly a hundred years.If one day it happens that at the height of good fortune the‘tree fallsand the monkeysscatter’as the old saying has it,then what will become of our cultured old family?”

Quick to comprehend,Xifeng was awe-struck.“Your fears are well-founded,”she said.“But how can we prevent such a calamity?”

通过对比可以发现,霍译本翻译出了原文中“月满则亏,水满则溢”“登高必跌重”“树倒猢狲散”“盛筵必散”四则俗语,译语分别是“The full moon smaller grows,full water overflows”“The higher the climb,the harder the fall”“when the tree falls,the monkeys scatter”“joy at its height engenders sorrow”。杨译本只翻译出了“月满则亏,水满则溢”“登高必跌重”“树倒猢狲散”三处隐喻俗语,译语分别是“the moon waxes only to wane,water brims only to overflow”“the higher the climb the harder the fall”“tree falls and the monkeys scatter”,唯一选择不译“盛筵必散”。

通过喻意相近的四则俗语,重复相同的语义所指,就是为了突出《红楼梦》小说整体的悲剧走向和物极必反的自然规律。两个译本都保留了作者和原著几个俗语的基本意思,但翻译取舍略有不同。“月满则亏,水满则溢”“登高必跌重”应该是中西方读者在生活经验中都能感受和体验到的相同经验认知,这两个俗语隐喻的翻译比较没有争议。最值得探讨的是两个译本对“树倒猢狲散”这一俗语的翻译。从猴子这一物种在英国乃至欧洲存在性的角度来讲,两个译本虽然都翻译了“树倒猢狲散”的俗语隐喻,但对英语读者受众的阅读经验帮助不大。杨先生的翻译选择,恐怕和他们翻译《红楼梦》的初衷并不是直接面对英语读者,而更多的只是出于传播中华传统文化的目的有关,所以并没有规避翻译“树倒猢狲散”这一俗语。作为一直比较突出译入语特色的霍译本来讲,此处并未秉承一贯尊重译入语读者受众的阅读经验认知的翻译处理手法,而恰恰相反,霍译本此处和杨译本一样尊重原著的文化信息,毫无保留地翻译出了源语的文化特色,也真是“无巧不成书”,这也是两位翻译大师不谋而合的地方。另外,在霍译本中,即使对“盛筵必散”这个俗语的翻译,其实也没有突出它作为隐喻的译文特点,只是翻译出了这个俗语的意思,英文译文“joy at its height engenders sorrow”,并没有突出“盛筵” 这个喻体,而在历来信奉“民以食为天”的中国文化中,“盛筵必散”的隐喻意义最清楚不过了。从以上几个俗语隐喻的翻译来看,译者的取舍对译语有着直接的影响,而译者的取舍往往和翻译的初衷以及考虑读者接受息息相关。
