日本是个多山的国家，平原面积狭小，分布零散，是个地形地貌奇特的岛国。日本处于亚欧板块与太平洋板块的交界处、环太平洋火山地震带上，多火山和地震。有270多座火山（其中活火山100多座），有“火山国”“地震国”之称。
