摩洛哥是非洲最古老的国家之一。公元7世纪阿拉伯人进入，并于8世纪建立第一个阿拉伯王国。从15世纪起，西方列强先后入侵。1956年摩洛哥独立。1957年8月14日正式定国名为摩洛哥王国，苏丹改称国王。
