意大利地处欧洲南部、地中海北岸，其领土包括亚平宁半岛、西西里岛、撒丁岛及其他小岛。亚平宁半岛像一只巨大的长筒靴伸入蔚蓝色的地中海。意大利北部与法国、瑞士、奥地利、斯洛文尼亚接壤，东、西、南三面临海，东面临亚得里亚海，南临爱奥尼亚海，西临第勒尼安海。在意大利境内还有两个独立的国家：一个是地处东北部的圣马力诺共和国，它是欧洲最古老的共和国；另一个是梵蒂冈，它位于意大利的首都罗马，是罗马天主教会的中心。意大利的国土面积约为301333平方千米，海岸线长约7200千米。
