历史上非洲各国的经济曾长期遭受西方发达国家的控制，使非洲成为世界上经济发展水平最低的洲，大多数国家经济落后。农业人口约占全洲总人口的2/3，许多经济作物的产量在世界上占有重要地位，如咖啡、花生、可可、丁香、棕榈油等。采矿业和轻工业是非洲工业的主要部门。非洲是世界交通运输业比较落后的一个洲，还没有形成完整的交通运输体系。交通运输以公路为主，海运业占一定地位。航空业发展较快。
