5.3.1 汉“或”英“与”
汉“或”英“与”这种情形在析取关系句对库中共找到14例，而且全部来自汉译英，即汉语中的析取关系到英语中变成了合取关系。为便于分析，现将所检索到的14个例子分为以下三组进行讨论。
第一组
117）他被大兵们拉到山上去的时候，顾不得看谁是排长，还是连长。
When the soldiers dragged him up into the mountains，he hadn’t paid the slightest attention to who was a platoon leader and who was a company commander.
118）被撤差的巡警或校役，把本钱吃光的小贩，或是失业的工匠，到了卖无可卖，当无可当的时候，咬着牙，含着泪，上了这条到死亡之路。
Laid-off policemen and school janitors，peddlers who have squandered their capital，and out-of-work laborers who have nothing more to sell and no prospects for work grit their teeth，swallow their tears，and set out on this road to oblivion.[2]
119）欢喜或忧惧强迫着人去计划，布置；
Happiness and worries forced people to plan and make arrangements.
120）在这里人们是真哭或真笑，并不是瞎起哄。
The wails and joyful outbursts were genuine，not an act.
121）一场雨，也许多添几个妓女或小贼，多有些人下到监狱去；大人病了，儿女们作贼作娼也比饿着强！

这一组例子的共同点在于汉语原文的意思可以用“不论（/不管/无论）是……还是……都……”来改写。例117）可改写为“……不论是排长还是连长，都顾不得看”。例118）可改写为“不论是被撤差的巡警或校役，把本钱吃光的小贩，还是失业的工匠，到了卖无可卖，当无可当的时候，都要咬着牙，含着泪，上了这条到死亡之路”。例119）可改写为“不论是欢喜还是忧惧，都强迫着人去计划，布置”。例120）可改写为“在这里人们不论是哭还是笑，都是真的，并不是瞎起哄”。例121）可改写为“一场雨多添的几个，不论是妓女还是小贼，都是多有些人下到监狱去的，……”。例122）可改写为“……不论是玩耍还是打架，都把屁股冻得通红的”。例123）可改写为“……不论是爬到老人的棉花疙疸外，还是爬到小儿的棉花疙疸外，都为了领略一点春光”。例124）可改写为“……不论是押宝还是牌九，都合他的脾味”。例125）可改写为“……不论是拉到玉泉山，拉到颐和园，还是拉到西山，都讲究一气儿”。如上的改写读起来不够自然，但基本上说得通，意思并没有根本的变化。“不论（/不管/无论）是……还是……都……”这样的句式表示条件或情况不同而结果不变。因为结果不变，所以这不同的条件或情况可以不做区别，统一处理。正是这一点，为英译成“and”提供了可能性。
第二组
126）大家争着告诉他去买什么药，或去找哪个医生。谁也不觉得这可耻，……
His friends eagerly gave advice on which drugs to use and which doctor to go to，none of them seeing anything shameful about his predicament.
127）东便道上有一大块阴影，挤满了人：老幼男女，丑俊胖瘦，有的打扮得漂亮近时，有的只穿着小褂，都谈笑着，盼望着，时时向南或向北探探头。
People filled a large patch of shade on the east side of the street，shoulder to shoulder—young and old，male and female，the ugly and the handsome，the fat and the skinny，some dressed with a modern flair，others in traditional mandarin jackets，but all chatting and smiling with keen anticipation and casting frequent glances to the north and south.
128）“车口儿”上，小茶馆中，大杂院里，每人报告着形容着或吵嚷着自己的事，而后这些事成为大家的财产，像民歌似的由一处传到一处。

第二组句对的共同点在于主语全是复数形式的主体，谓语则分述各种情形，因而可以用“有的……有的……”来改写。例126）可改写为“有的争着告诉他去买什么药，有的争着告诉他去找哪个医生……”。例127）可改写为“……有的时时向南探探头，有的时时向北探探头”。例128）可改写为“……有的报告着自己的事，有的形容着，有的吵嚷着自己的事……”。分述各种情形，毕竟以复数的主体这一整体为参照，当我们强调“his friends”“people”“the man”这些复数概念的整体时，部分情形的区分就变得不那么重要了，此时译为“and”也就有了合理性。
第三组
129）跑过几趟来，把腿蹓开，或者也就没事了。
A few more hauls to limber up his legs and he’d be back.
130）不是那些衣服，也不是她的模样，而是一点什么态度或神味，祥子找不到适当的字来形容。
It wasn’t her clothes or her looks；no，it had more to do with her attitude and her behavior，though Xiangzi had trouble putting it into words.
这一组的两个例子较为特殊，很难归类，跟翻译处理有较大关联。例129）中的“或者”是“也许”的意思。可以说，英译中的“and”之后省略了“perhaps”。“and”之前的小句表示条件，后面的小句表示结果。而汉语原文则采用意合法来连接，没有出现相当于“and”的连接词。例130）英译使用了“and”，跟前面的“had more to do with”有极大关系，“and”所连接的“attitude”和“behavior”都是受“had more to do with”支配的。不过，英译所表达的意思在字面上与原文有距离，译者做了灵活处理。
