Tea is a dazzling treasure in Chinese traditional culture and also an extremely important resource of the Silk Road.Yunnan, as the center of the origin of tea trees in the world, has the richest tea germplasm resources in the world and the diversified minority tea cultures.The Ancient Tea-horse Road, which extends from Yunnan to other countries in the world, is an integral part of the ancient Silk Road and has played a very important role in the global spread of Chinese culture.
云南，简称滇，位于中国南部边疆，云贵高原西南部。东部、东南部与贵州、广西接壤，西部、南部与缅甸、老挝、越南三国接壤，北部毗邻西藏、四川，国境线总长4061千米；总面积39.4万平方千米，占全国总面积的4.1%，居各省市、自治区第八位。云南是一个山地高原山区省，全省山地高原占总面积的94%。盆地和宽谷（云南称坝子）仅占6%。地势呈西北高、东南低，自西北向东南呈梯状下降。省内最高海拔6740米，系德钦县怒山山脉梅里雪山的卡瓦格博峰，它是公认的世界最美雪山，被誉为“雪山之神”。最低点海拔仅76.4米，系河口县南溪河与元江汇合处，高差达6663.6米。最高点与最低点直线距离仅900千米左右。
云南省境内水系众多，特别值得关注的是地处东亚、南亚和青藏高原三大区域交汇处的三条大江即金沙江、澜沧江、怒江，在云南平行并流了170多千米才各奔前程，形成 世界上独特的“三江并流”奇观，在横断山脉纵谷中平行并流的这三条横向距离最近的地段仅60多千米，并于2003年7月2日正式列入世界自然遗产名录。
“三江并流”地区仅占全国国土面积的约0.4%，但由于是中国唯一南北走向的横断山脉，使其成为欧亚大陆生物南北交错、东西汇合的通道，云集了从南亚热带、中亚热带、北亚热带、暖温带、温带、寒温带和寒带的多种气候类型和植物群落。“三江并流”地区系中国17个生物多样性关键区域的首位，被誉为“世界物种基因库”。
茶树，山茶属（Camellia）植物中这一个较大的种群即起源于这一地区的延伸地带即澜沧江流域，云南也就成为人类利用茶叶的发源地。
云南有世界上得天独厚的最适合茶树生长的自然生态条件，包括气候、土壤等生态环境。千万年前造山运动形成的高原成为世界茶树的发源地，成就了得天独厚的云南大叶种这个优良的茶树品种；云南有世界上得天独厚的世世代代种植利用茶树的26个民族，创造并传承了得天独厚的传统加工工艺及丰富多彩、博大精神的民族茶文化，深深地融入到各民族血脉中，融入到每个人的生命里；融入到各民族兄弟的生产生活中，并传承了得天独厚的陈化生香、品质优良的普洱茶传统加工工艺及普洱茶、滇红、滇绿三大品牌。云茶不仅仅是受人喜爱的健康饮品，也是一个大产业，一种生活方式。漫山遍野的现代茶园、生态茶园、绿色茶园、生机盎然的古茶山古茶林、古茶园，成就了青山绿水的良好生态，成为云南大生态的重要组成部分，也造就了云南各族人民尊重自然，保护生态的最朴素的科学发展观，更是边疆地区少数民族脱贫致富的靠山，“包容开放、团结拼搏”的茶马古道精神激励着“云茶走天下，云茶醉天下”……
Yunnan, referred to as“Dian”for short, is located in the southern frontier of China and the southwest of Yunnan-Guizhou Plateau.It borders Guizhou and Guangxi in the east and southeast,Myanmar, Laos and Vietnam in the west and south, and Xizang and Sichuan in the north, with a 4,061 km long boundary line and a total area of 394,000 km2, accounting for 4.1% of the total area of China, ranking eighth among all provinces, municipalities and autonomous regions.Yunnan is a mountainous province covered by mountains and plateaus which account for 94% of the total area.Basins and broad valleys (called dams in Yunnan)account for only 6%.Terrain is high in the northwest and low in the southeast, with a ladder-like decline from northwest to southeast.The highest elevation in the province is 6,740 m, which is the Kawagarbo Peak of Meri Snow Mountain in Nushan Mountains of Deqin County.It is recognized as the most beautiful snow mountain in the world and known as the“God of Snow Mountain”.The lowest point is only 76.4 m above sea level,which is the confluence of the Nanxi River and the Yuanjiang River in Hekou County.The height difference is 6,663.6 m.The straight line distance from the highest point to the lowest point is only about 900 km.
There are many water systems in Yunnan Province.It is particularly noteworthy that the three great rivers, namely Jinsha River, Lancang River and Nujiang River, which are located at the intersection of East Asia, South Asia and Qinghai-Xizang Plateau, run parallel for more than 170 km in Yunnan before diverting, forming a unique spectacle of“Three Parallel Rivers”in the world.The three rivers running parallelly in the longitudinal valley of Hengduan Mountains are only 60 km away from the nearest section in horizontal direction.They were officially listed in the World Natural Heritage List on July 2, 2003.
The“Three Parallel Rivers”area only accounts for about 0.4% of the national land area.However, it is located in the Hengduan Mountains, the only mountain range running from north to south in China, which makes it a channel for Eurasia’s creatures to crisscross from north to south and gather from east to west.There are many climate types and plant communities from south subtropical zone, middle subtropical zone, north subtropical zone, warm temperate zone, temperate zone,cold temperate zone and cold zone.The“Three Parallel Rivers”area ranks first among the 17 key biodiversity areas in China, and is known as the“World Species Gene Bank”.
Tea trees, a large population of Camellia plants, originate in the Lancang River Basin, an extension of“Three Parallel Rivers”area.Accordingly, Yunnan becomes the birthplace where humans use tea.
