如果春节期间重播的电视剧《西游记》勾起你对童年的一丝怀旧之情，那么在观看周星驰对于这部经典之作的翻拍之前，你在心理上最好有所准备。因为不同于原著的是，你将看到一个充满暗黑色彩、荒诞而又搞笑的颠覆性版本。换句话说，这是一部典型的周氏电影。
由周星驰自编自导并自己出品的电影《西游·降魔篇》是一部融合了神怪电影、浪漫爱情以及武侠神话的“狂想曲”。
继电影《长江七号》后经历了五年的蛰伏，这位香港喜剧天才终于回归。尽管周星驰自己并未参演，但整部影片从头至尾都打上了星爷的烙印。剧情发展到高潮时，总会迸出无厘头的搞笑情节。
周氏电影以往着力塑造一些不服输的小人物，刻画他们对于底层潦倒生活的抗争。然而这部电影的主角却有些出人意料，他并不是在影片结尾才以喜剧形象现身的孙悟空，而是去西天取经前的少年玄奘。
文章饰演的少年玄奘身上并没有周氏电影主人公一贯的那种传奇色彩。玄奘是一个几乎不会武功的驱魔人，然而却一直坚信每个妖魔鬼怪内心都有善良之处，他通过吟唱驱魔宝典《儿歌三百首》努力唤醒妖魔内心的那份纯真。
美丽泼辣的驱魔人段小姐（舒淇饰）无法自拔地爱上了玄奘，在她的帮助下，玄奘相继收服了三个妖怪，后来收为徒弟。
从故事叙事来看，这部电影给人的感觉像是《西游记》的前传，而正如周星驰所说的：“这是一部前传，但不仅仅是一部前传。”
